                  Facts about Laboratory Testing

Why has my doctor ordered laboratory tests?

Laboratory testing enables a physician to confirm or rule out disease processes, monitor changes due to medication or perform screenings to determine wellness. The best person to explain the reason for testing is your physician, so be sure to discuss with him or her any concerns or questions you may have.

When can I come for my tests?
Routine outpatient testing is available anytime; you will first need to register with the admissions clerk. If you come in afterhours or during the weekend, the emergency room clerk can assist you.

                  Do I need an appointment?
No appointment is necessary for most tests offered at the AVRH Laboratory.

Can I eat or drink before having my blood drawn?
Some tests do require that you not eat or drink for a period of time before having your blood drawn. Your physician will usually provide you with the patient preparation required for your tests. If you are not sure, call your physician's office for instructions.

                  Should I take my medications?
You should continue to take your medication unless your physician instructs you to discontinue the medication prior to having your test performed. If the test is to measure your response to a medication, please be sure to tell the nurse/medical technician the exact time of your last dose.

What do I need to bring with me?
Please bring the written order from your physician, your insurance card(s) and your photo ID. These will be needed for registration and ordering purposes.

How long will the procedure take?
Once you have completed the registration process, the time you spend within the laboratory is usually less than 30 minutes. However, there are tests (glucose / lactose tolerances) that require you to stay longer (1 to 5 hours). Please call the laboratory if you need specific information regarding time requirements for your tests.

When will I get the results?
Results are always sent to the ordering physician. Routine tests are usually available within 24 to 48 hours of your visit. Other tests may take longer (7-10 days). Contact your physician for more information.

                  Benefit Coverage
Benefits vary significantly and therefore it is important that you review your policy/coverage thoroughly and or discuss any concerns that you have with your insurance or Medicare representative.  Some plans require that your testing be performed only at certain laboratories and will not reimburse for tests performed in other laboratories.

Pre-registration is encouraged. If you choose to pre-register, our registration staff can help you identify potential coverage issues prior to your visit.

To pre-register, please contact us at (505) 426-3500 during regular business hours.

If you have any questions please contact us at 505-426-3586.
